Picture the scene. It is Sunday night. You are thinking forward to the new week ahead of you. How do you feel? What is that little voice inside of you saying? Is the voice excited? Is it happy?
Or maybe, you are one of the many, many people who are currently in transition as the economy moves around and shakes up our plans to stay still. If you are suddenly thinking about what you want from your work, you may be tempted to stop thinking and jump into the first thing that becomes available… This can be a recipe for financial security that comes with a predictable dose of Mondayitis
Being happy at work is incredibly subjective, it is different from person to person. It might even be different for you, this year, to 3 years ago. Maybe you love detail or solving problems, having clear goals, a vision for the future, or just being around people, or maybe you can’t think of anything worse! In today’s constantly evolving working world there are more job possibilities than there have been previously. The internet has opened up a plethora of options, including blogging full time, or selling your handmade creations online.
Having lots of options is a good thing, but not necessarily an easy thing! It can be overwhelming to try and figure out your next step.
Over a century ago, the Philosopher William James said “Human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind”. What if you altered your experience of work, where you spend the majority of your waking life, by lining it up with what is energising and satisfying for you?
Understanding more about what motivates you, what underlies your attitude to different tasks or work environments can help narrow the options.
Understanding your Values (what is important to you) can narrow it even further. Our values are sometimes described as our ‘internal compass’. When our work lines up with our Values, we are in alignment, or congruent with what we are doing from the inside out. The problem is, our conscious mind understanding of our values, vs our ACTUAL values, are two different things.
Understanding if you have a Call – the concept behind Joseph Campbell’s Heroe’s Journey – is even more powerful. As you move up every level from motivational patterns to values, to the level of a purpose bigger than yourself, you tap into greater and greater energy for change.
And finding something that feels that satisfying and meaningful can sometimes be a journey in itself. Believe it or not, considering how to find satisfying work is a really common outcome that people seek from Coaching. If you are stuck and want to explore if coaching can help get you moving in the right direction towards satisfying work, why not book in for a complimentary 45-minute coaching session to discuss it with me?
