What is Process Coaching?

This is the type of coaching that is sometimes described as ‘pure’ because it is possible for a Coach to do this with someone on any topic that they wish to explore or think more about.

Process Coaching is described beautifully by the world’s largest independent professional association for Coaches, the International Coaching Federation (ICF) when it defines coaching as:

“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential”

The ICF has created a series of ‘competencies’ that outline the skills to facilitate this process. It is a wonderful framework around which all high-quality training in coaching is designed. No matter what the topic of the coaching training, a Coach can demonstrate these competencies in how they interact with the client.

One of the absolute fundamentals to be aware of is that this process has a few ‘must-dos’, such as ‘asking the client what they want to achieve during the coaching session time’, and ‘partnering to close the session’, but it is otherwise an emergent conversation. What that means is, it has some structure, but at its core, is responsive and therefore it cannot be scripted.
